The limits of its stability are not well defined. Both c-BN and w-BN are formed by compressing h-BN, but formation of w-BN occurs at much lower temperatures close to 1700 °C. Graphite-like boron nitride was shock-compressed up to 550 kbar. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the recovered specimen identified the wurtzite structure whose hexagonal cell dimensions were a 0 = 2.553±0.003 A ̊, c 0 = 4.228±0.004 A ̊. No trace of zinc blende form was found. A third metastable form of Boron Nitride also exists – Wurtzite Boron Nitride (w-BN).
